Day 30: Tuesday 26 Feb 2008

Rock Falls. Been a bit of a problem over the last few days. And as the Herald Express story below explains, will delay the opening of the road. We were due to get new rosters on the 10th March, the ones we are using at the moment give us extra time to get round the diversion. The new rosters are now to start on 17th March. An extra week of very hard work. But if you look at the photo below you can see the different colour of the rock. Both the same rock but the lighter piece was, until a minute before I took the photo covered with thick vegetation and had not seen the light of day for years, decades probably. So until the trees and bushes and scrub had been removed it was impossible to know what the state of the cliff face truly was, Now it turns out in some places it was worse than expected.

And as you can see, it is big piece of rock that is holding up lots more rock. So while I am disappointed at having to continue using the diversion for the extra week and all the hard work that entails I would not expect the council to say,"Oh, it will be alright." Just so they could open the road.

Notes about the blog. Updated 08 March 2008

Not much is happening at Rock Work now. All the work clearing the trees has been done. A barrier has been erected to prevent rock falls from reaching the road. Now we wait for the geological survey in May to see what can be done to fix the rocks in place.
After that when work starts again later in the year I will post more photos.
Any news items I come across I will post as they appear in the local paper.

Or you can work through the whole blog to find more detail.

If you left click on a photo you get a larger image.

Each day has the label "Day", click on it and you will miss out the other posts.

Articles from the Herald Express are labelled Herald Express.

And so on.

Please feel free to leave a comment.
